I suppose that would depend on the kind of deck you're thinking of making.
What I'd suggest is you go to the excellent Traveller deck builder (
https://travellerdb.com/) and make the deck there, then see what cards you'd need.

Need, no but it can sure can help! I've played with just the standard decks and had a good time. Of course part of the fun is build the decks. The bigger the pool of cards the more choices you have. I'd also like to point you to the mini packs on at DriveThruCards.com these packs have some fun cards to add to your decks.

I hope the stuff arrived safely! Have you had a chance to make a deck yet?

I am not sure what you purchased; however, the starter set comes with extra cards to get 3 ofs for most of the Captains deck for the two ships. If oyu have the expansion packs, they come with a 3 of everything so that is kind of nice.
I have basically two complete 3 of sets, which allows myself and my wife to freely build any ship, in a variety of configurations. Any of the 4 starter decks out of the box are pretty decent to go up against each other. Of course, this solution costs more and to be honest there are only a handful of cards that wind up in every deck I build.

the extra ships arrived which is great, I have one copy of everything at the moment. have had a solo game with the far trader the game works well. I have looked at all the ships the scout ship and the deck it comes with (with some small changes) is my favorite atm. I like the safari ship as well.
solo play is pretty good the art is excellent

I've bought "one of everything" and been pretty happy, with no need to buy extra decks to get 3 of everything. I can build at least 4 workable decks at a time, but dont have enough
to build more than that. As it's only a 4 player game anyway this isn't really a problem.
