Private Messages?

Hello,
So I just noticed that I have messages sitting in my OUTBOX that I'm guessing have not been sent. What is the deal? Does some one have to be a "friend" :ally to send a PM too?

I will check with our IT people, but I think messages in your Outbox are unread, whereas in your sent are read.
