I should be visiting every once in a while. Maybe mid May this year based on speculation.
Any events during the year to aim for attending?

Hi Spuds,
My daughter lives by the Ala Wai Canal I just returned from a week trip in January. On my next visit I will bring a deck or two.

Sigh. One visit to Pearl Harbour was enough, (traffic and large city I have here at home). I was sure I'd only ever go back to Maui or the Big Island. Now how do I convince the wife we're going to Honolulu to play board games.....

One of my friends really hated Oahu because he's more into European architecture, culture, and food. So, I got to thinking about why someone may want to tourist specifically on Oahu (whereas for me it's seeing family). Hanuama Bay, Shark's Cove, Waimea Bay if someone is into beaches are the ones I'm familiar with that are ones I'd suggest trying, I guess Ala Moana Beach Park/Magic Island are fine if you want something more casual. There are scenic things I largely don't see, like waterfalls. The Pali being something to experience at least once. Gau gee mein with cake noodles, Zippy's Chili, I guess malasadas, manapua, haupia, fresh fruit, too, for food. Others might be into things like hiking up Diamond Head, golfing, helicopter rides, surfing, high end art, or whatever.
Honolulu is a city and much of the island is not as exotic as it used to be (we always shop at Costco, for instance, and I no longer smell flowers at the airport when I arrive). But, it's largely a matter of what someone is interested in as to whether another island or another "tropical" place would be better. Maui is more like a suburbs of Oahu with more of a tourist feel to me. Big Island is far more country with more unusual stuff (green sand beach is great but a huge pain to get to).
I might try to be in Honolulu for a few days in early May, but it's still up in the air.

As a foreigner living on Oahu it's ok, but I do like "Big island" better, it has a bit of everything and is more relaxed and less crowded.
Cheers.

Then again, any and all of it is still "Hawaii". As in, "I'm stuck in traffic, but this traffic is in Hawaii!
